What To Do If A Key Breaks In A Lock?

Do you ever had a key break inside the lock? It’s super annoying but it happens more often than you would think and for many different reasons so what to do if you’re lock stuck with a broken key?

If your key breaks inside a lock it is important to approach the situation calmly and methodically to avoid causing further damage to the lock or the broken key.

Do Not Try to Use the Broken Key

Avoid trying to use the remaining part of the broken key because it can only push the part that broke in side the lock further in and damage the lock mechanism.

Assess the Situation

Check how much of the key is sticking out from the lock and if a small part is visible you might be able to grip it with pliers or a similar tool and gently pull it out.

Use Tools if Appropriate

If a piece of the key is accessible you can use needle nose pliers or tweezers to carefully extract it but be gentle to avoid pushing the key further in.

Try a Key Extractor Tool

A key extractor tool is available at most hardware stores and it is specifically designed for these situations of removing broken keys from locks, insert the tool into the keyway along the grooved side of the key hook the teeth of the broken key and gently pull it out.

Apply Lubricant

Sometimes applying a lubricant like WD-40 can help ease the extraction process and by spraying a small amount into the keyway can push the broken piece out.

Tap the Lock

Tapping the lock gently with the back of a screw driver or a hammer can sometimes help the broken part of the key to slightly stick out making it easier to grasp.

Avoid Using the Lock

If the key is stuck inside stop using the lock immediately until the issue is resolved.

Get a Spare Key Made

Once the broken key is removed use a spare key if you have one and if not ask your locksmith to cut a new key using the broken pieces as a reference and if it is not possible have him rekey or replace the lock.

Call a Locksmith

If you’re unable to remove the key yourself and you’re worried about damaging the lock it’s best to call a professional locksmith that has the right tools and expertise to remove the broken key without damaging the lock.
